Some basic guidelines for the floor if heated with water

...based on solar energy and/or electric energy

Question: Do we need to insulate the concrete floor if heated?

Answer: Yes - absolutely, preferably with 50 mm EPS

EPS is available from various suppliers in South Africa in densities ranging 12 kilo/3 to 30 kilo/m3. Make calculation of the load the EPS is exposed to and select the correct density.




Question: How to design the concrete floor construction

Answer: quite simple if the floowing is followed.

  1. Concrete deck for carrying load
  2. 20 mm EPS vertically at every edge
  3. 50 mm EPS horizontal placed tight with no gaps in between
  4. Plastic feet to lift the steel net minimum 10 mm from EPS
  5. Secure the 20 mm PEX tubing to the steel net with 300 mm distance
  6. Pour minimum 80 mm contrate

Question: Will the EPS be able to carry a wall?

Answer: Only if the wall is a ligth construction. If from bricks a supporting foundation is needed.
